The Copper Kettle has an incredibly rich history; established in the early 1900s, and sitting opposite King’s College in the heart of Cambridge, this may well have been where Alan Turing enjoyed his afternoon tea.
Alan Turing famously coined The Turing Test – exploring whether a machine can exhibit intelligence equivalent to that of a human’s. Considered an early pivotal figure in computing, Turing studied at King’s College in Cambridge and is commemorated with both a plaque and a statue in the college grounds.
Looking out onto King’s, but accessible to all, the Copper Kettle thus struck us as the perfect venue for our second iteration of The Hopes and Fears Lab: AI Edition this April. More about The Hopes and Fears Lab project here, and the videos from our first AI Edition can be seen here.
We paired with ai@cam and the Cambridge Festival to deliver this iteration of the Lab. On the 2nd of April, festival goers had the chance to watch Neil Lawrence in a panel discussion titled ‘How can we harness the power of AI for public benefit?’, and then on the following day the Lab opened its doors. Attendees were welcome to explore these themes further, with a range of researchers working in AI fields.
We were delighted to welcome researchers discussing topics ranging from AI and Misinformation to AI and Wellbeing – full list below! The conversations flowed seamlessly for the 4 hours of the Lab – if you had any particularly inspiring conversations, we’d love to hear about them! Get in touch with us at kavlicentre@educ.cam.ac.uk with your comments and feedback.
